Commercial Shop Fit-Outs: What Business Owners Should Know

    5 min read

A well-executed shop fit-out sets the tone for your business from day one. We have completed commercial fit-outs including cafe builds and retail spaces, and understand the unique pressures of commercial projects: tight deadlines, specific compliance requirements, and the need to get it right the first time.

    Planning your fit-out

Commercial fit-outs require careful planning before any construction begins. You need to consider the layout and customer flow, compliance with the Building Code of Australia for commercial use, disability access requirements, fire safety compliance, and any specific requirements from your lease or landlord.

We work with you to understand your business needs and translate them into a practical construction plan. For our cafe fit-out project, this meant custom joinery, counters, and interior carpentry all built to a tight deadline.

    Permits and compliance

Most commercial fit-outs require a building permit, particularly if you are changing the use of the space, modifying the layout, or altering services. Your local council may also require a planning permit depending on the type of business and the zoning of the premises.

Food premises have additional requirements including commercial kitchen standards, ventilation, and fire suppression systems. We coordinate with the relevant authorities and specialists to ensure your fit-out is compliant from the outset.

    Timelines and deadlines

Commercial fit-outs almost always have firm deadlines driven by lease start dates, business launch dates, or seasonal trading requirements. We understand the cost of delays in a commercial context and plan our work accordingly.

A typical small to medium shop fit-out takes 2 to 6 weeks depending on the scope. We provide a detailed project schedule at the quoting stage and communicate proactively if anything changes.

    Our commercial experience

While our core work is residential, we have completed notable commercial projects including a full cafe fit-out with custom joinery and counters, and gym flooring for the AFL Western Bulldogs. We have also completed work at Dallas Primary School over a 12-month period, which involved framing, external lock-up, cladding, and detailed finishing work.

Commercial projects require the same attention to quality as residential work, with the added discipline of working to strict schedules and within occupied or public environments.
