How Much Does Fencing Cost Per Metre in Melbourne?

    5 min read

Fencing is one of those projects where the cost can vary significantly depending on the material, the height, the terrain, and how the fence is built. Rather than giving you a single number, we want to walk you through the factors that actually determine what your fence will cost per metre, so you can budget with confidence.

    Timber paling fence costs

A standard 1.8-metre treated pine paling fence is the most common boundary fence in Melbourne. Installed pricing typically falls somewhere in the range you would expect for a quality build with proper posts, screwed rails, and adequate post depth and cement.

Hardwood timber fencing costs more per metre. Merbau palings, capped and lapped hardwood fences, and feature timber screens all sit at a premium, but the result is a fence with significantly more visual appeal and longevity.

Our pricing always includes the full job: post holes, posts, rails, palings, gates, clean-up, and disposal of any old fencing. We do not quote a headline rate and then add extras later.

    Colorbond fence costs

Colorbond fencing pricing per metre depends on the height and the profile. Standard 1.8-metre Colorbond in a common colour is competitive with quality timber fencing. Premium colours and taller panels cost more.

Colorbond also requires concrete footings for every post, which is standard practice but adds to the labour component. The overall installed cost per metre is generally slightly higher than treated pine timber but comes with the benefit of virtually zero ongoing maintenance.

    Feature and front fencing

Front fences and feature fencing are in a different pricing category entirely. These are often a combination of materials: rendered brick piers with aluminium slats, hardwood screens, or Colorbond panels between masonry pillars.

The cost per metre for feature fencing varies widely based on the design complexity, materials, and whether the fence includes automation for gates. These projects are always quoted on a case-by-case basis after a site visit.

What affects the price per metre

Several factors push fencing costs up or down beyond just the material choice. Sloping blocks require stepped panels or raked fencing, both of which add complexity and labour. Rocky ground can make post hole digging significantly harder. Access matters too: if materials need to be carried through a house or over obstacles, that adds time.

Demolition and removal of an existing fence is typically quoted separately. If there are trees or roots along the fence line, that can complicate post hole digging and add time to the project.

The length of the run matters as well. Longer fencing runs are generally more cost-effective per metre because the setup and access time is spread across more linear metres.

How to get an accurate quote

The most accurate way to understand what your fencing project will cost is to have someone come out to your property, measure the runs, assess the terrain, and discuss your material preferences. That is exactly what we do.

We provide detailed, itemised quotes based on an in-person site measure. You will see exactly what is included, what each component costs, and what the total will be. No surprises, no hidden extras.
