Pool Fencing Requirements in Victoria: What You Need to Know

    5 min read

Pool fencing in Victoria is governed by strict regulations designed to prevent drowning, particularly of young children. If you have a swimming pool or spa that holds water more than 300mm deep, you need compliant barrier fencing. Here is what the regulations require and how we can help.

    Basic fencing requirements

Under the Building Regulations 2018, pool barriers in Victoria must be at least 1.2 metres high with no climbable elements within 900mm of the top. The barrier must completely enclose the pool area, and all gates must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch at least 1.5 metres from the ground or shielded.

The barrier cannot have gaps greater than 100mm through which a child could pass. This applies to the space under the fence, between pickets or panels, and at gates. Vertical pickets or panels are preferred because they are harder to climb than horizontal designs.

    Compliance inspections

All swimming pools and spas in Victoria require a current pool barrier compliance certificate. Properties with pools must be registered on the Victorian Swimming Pool and Spa Register, and barrier compliance must be verified every four years.

When you sell a property with a pool, a current compliance certificate is required. Non-compliant barriers can result in fines and, more importantly, pose a serious safety risk. If your pool fencing needs upgrading to meet current standards, we can assess and rectify it.

    Material options for pool fencing

Glass pool fencing provides an unobstructed view of the pool area and a modern aesthetic. Frameless glass is the premium option, while semi-frameless glass offers a similar look at a lower cost. Both must meet the relevant Australian Standards for strength and safety.

Aluminium pool fencing is a cost-effective option that meets all compliance requirements. Timber can also be used for pool barriers provided the design meets the non-climbable and gap requirements. We can advise on the best material for your specific situation.
